Troll image by J.P. Hammond 1885The World Historical and Actual : World History Books

Antique books on ancient and modern man. Books on the present peoples of the earth in their gradual emergence from barbarism in to the sunlight of today, and as they now stand upon the plane of civilization.

Thomas Carlyle, wrote that "the history of the world is but the biography of great men." He believed that it is the few, the powerful and the famous who shape our collective destiny as a species. How did the Victorian people approach ancient cultures (or any other culture, for that matter). What were their beliefs on how the war was lost or won. Did England see the Revolutionary War as a win for the United States? Were the Russian Czar''s friend or foe to China in the 1830's? Historical idealisms change with time. The facts may be the same but the impressions left on the world by the authors can be very different.

This classification of books has to do with countries of the world, their people and their history. They reflect the growth and character of cultures, many of which have now been lost in time. These books often containe highly collectable, historically significant and sought after maps and illustrations.
