A bound periodical has the appearance of a hardcover book but contains multiple issues of a journal. During the Victorian Era a publishing trend rose to popularity called serialized fiction. Charles Dickens, George Eliot, William Thackeray and Joseph Conrad, chose to provide their newest works of fiction in installments and publish them in these periodicals.
Not just fiction, these periodicals often contain important historical references, advertisements, poetry and illustrations. These magazines and newspapers were often then bound into annuals or semi-annuals, some of the most famous being Harpers, Scribners, Punch, All the Year Round, Blackwoods, Household Words and many others.
