We are often asked by collectors if a particular title is a first edition. Identification of a first edition does not always rely on the date printed in the book. First Edition Points help a collector identify a first edition by describing details such as a book's binding, a specific first printing typo, or a dust jacket error that can only be found on the first publishing.
Note that during the 1830's and 1840's, publishers usually issued from 500 to 1,000 copies of a new title, and the great majority never went into a second edition. For other kinds of reading, however, these numbers are not so striking. Most first edition Dickens' novels regularly had print runs of ten thousand or more, as did Thomas Babington Macaulay's History of England. A book of advice or an almanac might have sold hundreds of thousands of copies in a print year.
Only if we have verified it through reliable sources will our books state first edition. Our books may however sometimes be identified as " First Edition Thus" i.e. a first printing by a particular publisher, but not a true first (first time in print). You may also meet up with the description "First Illustrated Edition" (previously published, but illustrations added in this edition).
