Over 225 fables with 58 in text and 29 full plate illustrations in black and white. This Victorian book of Aesop's Fables was not selected for its cover, which is rough by all standards and therefore has been rated as poor. Instead it has been added due to the wonderful full page woodcut illustrations by Ernest Griset.

Within the editor's preface is stated

" In revising these editions to suit modern tastes and current modes of expression, no principle has been followed save that of trying to exhibit each Fable in its liveliest and most attractive dress. To this end, in some cases, almost the exact words of Croxall and L'Estrange are given; in others the versions of these authors have been added to, altered or curtailed; while in not a few the dress is almost if not altogether new."

Edited by J B Rundell. Other than "J.B.R." after the editor's preface, there is no other mention of his name, even on the title page. This is not unusual for early books that include Rundell's editions of Aesop.

There is no publisher mentioned and the only date for this copy is written in pencil on the dedication (1862). The binding style and condition though seem to substantiate a later date of 1869 - 1874.

J B Rundell was first published in 1869 and there is no mention of "Later Fables" in this edition.

Typically smaller format reprints of the Rundell/Griset work after the third edition (1874-5?) had on 141 an announcement of "Later Fables," namely those which did not appear in the first two editions.

Library cloth repair to the spine. Cloth beginning to separate from all corners of the covers. Embossed gilt title to cover page, gilt beginning to fade. Blind stamped decorative back cover with water damage.

AEG (All Edges Gilt). 240 pages all tight to the spine. Pencil scribble on FFEP. Upper left corner torn off on first page of editor's preface (does not affect text). Open tear (1/2") on bottom of first four pages. Pages 43 to 45 have been torn and repaired long ago with cellophane tape. All pages heavily foxed. Chipping to edges of many pages.
