From the famous German journal Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen. The founder of the journal, Augustus Petermann (1822-1878), and the publishing house Justus Perthes in Gotha played major roles in the development of many countries through their maps.

The journal, which still exists today, greatly influenced the development of scientific geography and cartography in Germany well into the nineteenth century. The journal developed into an important publication, setting the standard in the history of the great expeditions, discoveries, and European colonial matters. Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen was published between the year of its foundation, 1855, to the end of the Second World War and included 160 of the most attractive geographical and thematic coloured maps of which this is just one.

Single Map : col. ; 25.5 x 65.8 cm., on sheet 27.2 x 68.8 cm. Three distinct creases from originlal folds as well as full length crease, again from original. Slight cut on left margin that does not extend into the map. Very slight foxing to upper edge of frame, but again does not extend into map. Heavy gage paper. Nice map in very nice condition.
